At a conference of foreign ministers from the group Friends of Haiti, held in Montreal on 25 January, the Mayor of Montréal and Vice-President of UCLG made clear the readiness of local governments to work alongside all mobilized partners in the reconstruction of Haiti. In The Netherlands, the municipalities collected 2,5 million euro for the reconstruction of public services and municipal governance capacity, following the earthquake which has devastated the capital city and many other cities and towns.
There is a great need for the reconstruction of local governments after the devastating earthquake. Clearly public facilities need to be rebuild, but also public services like registration of property, population register etc. need to be re-established.The money raised will be used to help Haiti with the great challenge of reconstructing local government.
Gérald Tremblay, Mayor of Montreal, together with Bertrand Delanoë, Mayor of Paris and President of UCLG, presented the Prime Minister of Haiti and the Canadian Foreign Minister with a Declaration of support. The declaration constitutes a commitment to investing all efforts to create the optimum conditions in which to draw up a plan for the economic and social reconstruction of Haitian towns and cities. In addition, it commits to gather funds for the implementation of this plan and to mobilize experts in the fields of municipal governance, urban planning and planning of infrastructure and municipal facilities.
