Local governance on top of EU-development agenda

The EU and other development organisations are increasingly recognizing the important role of local authorities in reaching development objectives. The ‘European Development Cooperation Charter in Support of Local Governance’ aims at better coherence of initiatives from different European actors.

Publications on local governance

Two interesting publications come from Jan Willem Nibbering and two local governance experts from VNG International: 'Capacity development for local governance' (pdf) describes the situation in Benin. 'Giving local government a more central place' (pdf) examines the need of donor support for decentralisation.
